Attending Introduction
Board certified in Internal Medicine & Nephrology and has over 30 years experience in New York City. This attending has been hosting rotations for FMG Portal students for over 15 years and has been affiliated with Mount Sinai since 1991. You will have the opportunity to see 10-15 patients per day, learn to use EMR software and also visit dialysis clinics. You may be able to visit the hospital if patients are admitted, and you’ll be able to watch Nephrology grand rounds of Mount Sinai via zoom on Wednesdays. This is a hands-on rotation and you will be able to talk with patients and examine them.
Rotation Description
During your Nephrology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain valuable experience in the diagnosis and management of kidney-related conditions in an outpatient setting.
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that patient cases vary and therefore you may not see the entirety of the following.
Patient Care:
- Renal Function: You will learn about the normal functioning of the kidneys, including filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
- Kidney Diseases: Understanding the pathophysiology of common renal disorders such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), glomerulonephritis, and nephrotic syndrome.
Clinical Skills:
- Patient Assessment: Learning to take a detailed medical history, perform a focused physical examination, and interpret relevant laboratory tests (such as serum creatinine, electrolytes, and urinalysis). You will also learn to use EMR software.
- Imaging Studies: Understanding the role of imaging modalities like ultrasound and CT scans in evaluating kidney anatomy and function.
Management of Kidney Disorders
- Medical Management: Learning about pharmacological interventions for managing conditions like hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and complications of kidney disease.
- Dietary and Lifestyle Interventions: Understanding the role of diet, fluid management, and lifestyle modifications in managing kidney disease and preventing progression.
- Dialysis: Introduction to various modalities of renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the principles of vascular access management.
Overall, a Nephrology outpatient clinical rotation will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of kidney diseases, their management, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in providing optimal care to patients with renal disorders.
