Rotation Description
During your Nephrology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain valuable experience in the diagnosis and management of kidney-related conditions in an outpatient setting.
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that patient cases vary and therefore you may not see the entirety of the following.
Patient Care:
- Renal Function: You will learn about the normal functioning of the kidneys, including filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
- Kidney Diseases: Understanding the pathophysiology of common renal disorders such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), glomerulonephritis, and nephrotic syndrome.
Clinical Skills:
- Patient Assessment: Learning to take a detailed medical history, perform a focused physical examination, and interpret relevant laboratory tests (such as serum creatinine, electrolytes, and urinalysis). You will also learn to use EMR software.
- Imaging Studies: Understanding the role of imaging modalities like ultrasound and CT scans in evaluating kidney anatomy and function.
Management of Kidney Disorders
- Medical Management: Learning about pharmacological interventions for managing conditions like hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and complications of kidney disease.
- Dietary and Lifestyle Interventions: Understanding the role of diet, fluid management, and lifestyle modifications in managing kidney disease and preventing progression.
- Dialysis: Introduction to various modalities of renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the principles of vascular access management.
