Observership vs. Clinical Externship

Unlike observerships, Clinical Externships are hands-on experience where you are responsible for such duties as: presenting patients, assessing histories and performing physical examinations, as well as other tasks assigned to you by your Attending Physician. Observerships do not carry the weight of an Externship as they are not hands-on, and they are not recognized as the required USCE experience when applying to residency programs. FMG Portal strictly provides hands-on Clinical Externships.

What kind of experience do you provide?

FMG Portal provides you with guaranteed hands-on clinical experience directly under the supervision of a U.S. licensed Attending Physician affiliated with a local teaching hospital. You will be presenting patients, performing histories and physicals, as well as other specialty specific duties. A professional letter of recommendation will be provided to you at the end of your externship period.

What duration should I choose for my externship experience?

It is highly recommended that you complete a minimum of 12 weeks to be able to meet the requirements of most residency programs. The longer the duration, the more weight the experience has on your resume. The majority of our clients begin their experience with a 12 week externship program.

Is it possible to work with more than one Attending Physician to yield more LORs?

Yes. In order to maximize the strength of your residency applications, we recommend completing your externship experience with more than one Attending Physician in order to acquire more LORs.

Will I have to submit full payment for the externship prior to beginning?

No. FMG Portal offers you the opportunity to be billed on a monthly basis

Will it be possible for me to speak with my Attending Physician prior to my start date?

Yes, at FMG Portal we offer full transparency, providing you with the ability to contact your respective attending physician(s) prior to being invoiced for your externship position.

Is it possible to obtain references for your services?

Yes, and you may also be given references from those who have previously been with the Attending Physician to which you are assigned.

How do I submit the Application Fee and Seat Deposit?

The application fee and seat deposit may be paid by check, money order, credit card, or wire transfer. U.S. issued card payments can be made directly via the pricing page of our website.

Do you help with accommodations?

Yes. If you need to find accommodations in the vicinity of your clinical externship location, we will work with you to find local places to stay.

What should I expect as far as my externship schedule?

The schedule typically follows the schedule of your assigned Attending Physician. Positions have a required minimum of 5 half days per week, and scheduling typically offers some flexibility. You will be able to discuss the details with your Attending Physician prior to the start of your externship.

When should I apply for a position?

We suggest that you submit your documents at your earliest convenience as we operate on a first come, first served basis. We recommend that documents are submitted at least 4 weeks before you wish to begin your Externship in order to have sufficient time to process your request.

What specialties do you offer?

We currently offer Externships in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, Surgery and Psychiatry. We also offer sub-specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Oncology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Pain Medicine, and Hematology.

Will I receive a discount if I apply with a friend?

Yes, if you both participate in an externship, you are eligible for a discount. Please contact us for more information.
