For more than a decade, he has been hosting rotations for FMG Portal students. The attending would like to inform you that rotation focuses on Emergency Medicine in the Rural setting.
Rotation Description
During your Emergency Medicine clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain hands-on experience in a rural healthcare environment.
This rotation aims to develop your clinical skills, medical knowledge, and ability to handle urgent and emergent medical situations. Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following.
Clinical Skills Development:
Perform focused history-taking and physical examinations
Develop differential diagnoses and management plans
Learn and practice procedural skills (e.g., suturing, IV placement, intubation)
Medical Knowledge:
Understand common presentations in emergency medicine, including trauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory distress, and more
Recognize life-threatening conditions and initiate appropriate interventions
Typical Activities:

Patient Care: Under supervision, students take primary responsibility for initial patient assessment and management, presenting cases to attending physicians or residents

Procedures: Opportunities to observe and possibly assist in various procedures, such as wound care, splinting, lumbar punctures, and more
Typical Activities/Procedures
Trauma Management: Initial assessment and stabilization of trauma patients, understanding ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) principles
Cardiovascular Emergencies: Recognition and management of conditions like myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest
Respiratory Emergencies: Treatment of acute asthma, COPD exacerbations, and pulmonary embolism
Neurological Emergencies: Handling strokes, seizures, and altered mental status
Pediatric Emergencies: Addressing common pediatric issues and understanding pediatric resuscitation techniques
Toxicology: Identifying and managing poisonings and overdoses
Infectious Diseases: Initial management of sepsis, meningitis, and other infectious diseases
Patient Appointments:
Conducting initial and follow-up appointments, managing acute and chronic conditions, and performing routine health maintenance.
Administrative Duties:
Completing patient charts and managing referrals and follow-ups.
