Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Family Medicine Focus:
- Comprehensive Primary Care: Experience a wide range of patient conditions, including chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and obesity, as well as routine care like vaccinations and screenings.
- Holistic Patient Management: Learn to provide preventive care, health maintenance, and education for patients of all ages, from children to seniors, focusing on the continuity of care.
- Chronic Disease Management: You’ll work closely with patients on managing long-term conditions like hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes through lifestyle changes, medications, and follow-up care.
- Acute Care: Treat common acute issues such as respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and minor injuries, gaining diagnostic and management skills in a broad primary care setting.
- Preventive Medicine: Emphasize lifestyle counseling, health promotion, and disease prevention, helping patients with fitness, nutrition, and mental health alongside treating their medical concerns.
Sports Medicine Focus:
- Injury Diagnosis & Treatment: You’ll learn to assess and manage acute and chronic injuries such as sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, and overuse injuries like tendinitis and stress fractures.
- Non-Surgical Interventions: Gain experience in joint injections, bracing, splinting, and rehabilitation therapies to restore function and mobility.
- Rehabilitation & Return-to-Play: Collaborate with physical therapists to create individualized rehab programs for athletes, ensuring a safe return to physical activity and sports.
- Preventative Care: Focus on injury prevention strategies through proper conditioning, stretching, and biomechanics, as well as teaching athletes about injury risk reduction.
- Sideline & Event Coverage: You may have the opportunity to provide on-the-spot care during athletic events, learning how to manage injuries in real time and make return-to-play decisions.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Integrated Care: Develop skills in balancing general primary care with specialized sports medicine interventions, learning when to refer patients to specialists or manage conditions conservatively.
- Patient Education: Gain proficiency in educating both athletes and non-athletes on health maintenance, injury prevention, and lifestyle modifications.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists in both settings to provide comprehensive care.
