Rotation Description

During your Endocrinology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain specialized training in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of endocrine disorders.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Clinical Skills

  1. Patient Evaluation: Conducting comprehensive patient histories with a focus on endocrine symptoms, such as weight changes, fatigue, polyuria, and heat/cold intolerance.

  2. Physical Examination: Performing focused physical examinations to identify signs of endocrine disorders, including thyroid palpation, assessing for goiter, and looking for physical signs of hormone imbalances.

Diagnosis and Management:

  1. Common Endocrine Disorders: Gaining familiarity with a wide range of endocrine conditions such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules), adrenal disorders, pituitary disorders, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone diseases.

  2. Diagnostic Testing: Learning to order and interpret relevant laboratory tests (e.g., blood glucose, HbA1c, thyroid function tests, hormone levels) and imaging studies (e.g., thyroid ultrasound, bone densitometry).

Treatment and Follow-up:

  • Pharmacologic Management: Understanding the use of medications in endocrine disorders, such as insulin, oral hypoglycemics, thyroid hormone replacement, anti-thyroid drugs, and hormone replacement therapies.

  • Non-Pharmacologic Management: Emphasizing lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and exercise in managing conditions like diabetes and osteoporosis.

  • Patient Education: Educating patients about their conditions, treatment plans, and self-management strategies, particularly for chronic diseases like diabetes.
