Attending Introduction

This gastroenterologist offers medical students valuable exposure to digestive and liver diseases, with extensive training in gastroenterology, hepatology, and advanced endoscopic procedures. They completed a three-year fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Louisville and are board certified in the specialty.

Their practice has a particular focus on advanced therapeutic endoscopy and serves as a major referral center for ERCP, EUS, and complex pancreatobiliary disorders. A rotation with this physician would provide students with exposure to a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and the evaluation and management of complex pancreatobiliary disease.

Students interested in gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, or procedural medicine would gain valuable insight into both the clinical and procedural aspects of the specialty.

Rotation Description

During your Gastroenterology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain specialized knowledge and experience in managing a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. This rotation is designed to provide in-depth exposure to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with GI conditions.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Clinical Skills:

  1. Patient Assessment: Taking comprehensive patient histories focused on gastrointestinal symptoms, performing targeted physical examinations, and understanding the relevance of findings.

  2. Diagnostic Techniques: Learning to order and interpret diagnostic tests such as blood tests, stool studies, imaging (e.g., abdominal ultrasound, CT scans), and endoscopic procedures (e.g., colonoscopy, upper endoscopy).

    Common Conditions:

  3. Gastrointestinal Disorders: Managing conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), peptic ulcer disease, and liver diseases (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis).

  4. Functional and Structural Abnormalities: Identifying and treating motility disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, and malignancies.

Treatment and Management:

  1. Pharmacological Therapy: Learning about medications used in GI practice, including proton pump inhibitors, antacids, antiemetics, antispasmodics, and immunosuppressants.

  2. Non-Pharmacological Approaches: Understanding dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, and other non-pharmacological interventions to manage GI conditions.

  3. Long-term Management: Developing skills for managing chronic GI diseases, including follow-up care and monitoring for complications.

Procedural Skills:

  • Endoscopic Procedures: Observing and sometimes assisting in procedures like esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy to understand their indications, techniques, and findings.

  • Biopsy and Pathology: Understanding when and how to take biopsies during endoscopic procedures and interpreting pathology reports.
This rotation will allow you to develop a thorough understanding of gastrointestinal diseases, improve your clinical and procedural skills, and to learn to provide comprehensive care.
