Attending Introduction

From your attending: I have 25+ years’ experience in the field of general surgery. Over that time, I have taught thousands of medical students and surgical trainees from all over the world. I am on the faculty of several medical schools in the United States and abroad. I have also been on the faculty of medical schools in the United Kingdom and in Europe. Currently, I am the Director of Surgical Education at a University in Brooklyn, New York. I have a research interest in virtual reality as it applies to anatomy and surgical planning.

Rotation Description

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Telemedicine Rotation Setup:

You will cover all of the important core topics in general surgery. This curriculum includes topics such as bowel obstruction, hernia, biliary disease, colon cancer & trauma resuscitation. These are all important conditions to understand as they commonly present to the surgical service in any hospital and they are favorite topics for examination questions in the
USMLE Step 2 examination as well as the surgical SHELF exam taken by third-year medical students here in the United States.

Rotation Description:

The typical schedule comprises of daily 75 to 90-minute online sessions centered around a topic chosen the night before the session. The sessions are run in an informal interactive Question and Answer format. This is a low stress format in which the students are encouraged to contribute
and speak up, even if they are not sure of the correct answer. We do not judge or criticize students for lack of knowledge. The sessions typically run 4 or 5 days a week. There is preparatory reading to be done before each session. We also share papers and online videos within the group to further understanding.

Evaluation:

Upon completion of the rotation and upon demonstrating active  participation and enthusiasm for the rotation, students receive positive but honest letters of recommendation on an institutional letterhead for the purposes of recommending the students for applications towards postgraduate training.
