Attending Introduction

Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine. Earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed  internal medicine residency at Loyola University Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties, they are dedicated to building strong relationships with patients, grounded in trust, respect, and honesty, treating each patient like family. Rotation areas of focus include Obesity Medicine, nutrition, hyperlipidemia (cholesterol management), and preventive cardiology.

You will be able to have hands-on experience in the outpatient setting, including interacting with patients, taking medical histories, performing basic physical exams and observing diagnosis and treatment conditions.

Rotation Description

An Obesity Medicine clinical rotation for medical students offers a comprehensive experience in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of obesity and its related conditions.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.


Patient Care

  • Comprehensive Histories and Physical Exams: Conduct thorough patient interviews and physical examinations across all age groups, from infants to the elderly.

  • Diagnosis and Management: Develop differential diagnoses and management plans for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, such as infections, hypertension, diabetes, and musculoskeletal issues.

  • Preventive Care: Emphasize health maintenance and disease prevention, including vaccinations, cancer screenings, lifestyle counseling, and wellness check-ups.

Chronic Disease Management:

  • Develop skills in managing common internal medicine conditions  including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to address patients’ needs remotely, including medication adjustments, lifestyle interventions, and monitoring disease progression.

Bariatrics and Weight Management:

  • Learn about the treatment and management of obesity and weight-related disorders.
  • Participate in designing personalized weight management programs, including diet, exercise, and behavioral counseling for bariatric patients.
  • Understand the role of pharmacological interventions and the indications for bariatric surgery, along with long-term patient follow-up.This rotation provides hands-on experience and deep insight into the medical management of obesity, preparing students for integrative patient care.

Typical Activities/Procedures

  • Patient Evaluation: Students will assess patients’ weight, lifestyle, and comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, and review family history to develop a thorough understanding of obesity’s multifactorial causes.
  • Treatment Planning: Students will learn to create individualized treatment plans focusing on dietary interventions, physical activity, behavioral changes, and pharmacological therapy under supervision.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Exposure to patient education on proper nutrition, portion control, and sustainable eating habits will be provided, working closely with dietitians and nutritionists.
  • Behavioral Therapy: Students will observe and participate in motivational interviewing and behavioral counseling sessions to support long-term weight loss.
  • Pharmacotherapy: Instruction on FDA-approved medications for weight management, including indications, contraindications, and side effects, will be covered.
  • Surgical Interventions: Students may observe bariatric surgeries (e.g., gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy) and participate in pre- and post-surgical patient care.
  • Comorbidity Management: Students will engage in managing obesity-related conditions such as metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Multidisciplinary Care: Collaboration with a team including endocrinologists, dietitians, psychologists, and exercise specialists will be emphasized to understand the holistic approach to treating obesity.
