Hospitalist board certified in Internal Medicine and has over 20 years experience. Based in Hagerstown, Maryland and has worked with FMG Portal for over 8 years. Based at Meritus Medical Center. This rotation is an inpatient only observational rotation. 

 

Rotation Description


Your rotation in Internal Medicine with FMG Portal will provide you with experience in diagnosing and managing a wide range of adult medical conditions under the supervision of your experienced attending physician.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Acute Care Skills:

  1. Admission and Discharge: Learning the process of admitting patients to the hospital, including obtaining relevant history and formulating initial management plans. Also, understanding the discharge process and planning for post-hospitalization care.
  2. Monitoring: Learning to monitor and manage patients in acute settings, including interpreting vital signs, laboratory results, and imaging studies to guide treatment decisions.
  3. Discussion: Engaging in discussions about differential diagnoses, treatment options, and evidence-based
    medicine with the medical team.

Professional Development:

  1. Communication Skills:
    Improving communication skills, including effectively explaining diagnoses and treatment plans to patients and their families.
    Practicing how to handle difficult conversations, such as discussing poor prognoses or delivering bad news empathetically.
  2. Time Management and Efficiency:
    Learning to manage a busy outpatient schedule, including balancing the need for thorough patient care with the realities of time constraints. Developing strategies for efficient documentation and follow-up care.
  3. Ethical and Professional Conduct:
    Upholding high standards of professionalism, including patient confidentiality, informed consent, and ethical decision-making.
    Cultivating a compassionate approach to patient care, building trust, and fostering long-term patient relationships.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Team-Based Care:
    Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, and social workers, to deliver comprehensive patient care. Learning about the roles and contributions of different healthcare professionals in managing complex patients.
  • Specialty Consultations:
    Gaining exposure to various internal medicine subspecialties through consultations and referrals, enhancing understanding of when and how to involve specialists.
By the end of your Internal Medicine outpatient rotation, you should be well-equipped with the foundational skills needed for managing a diverse patient population in an ambulatory setting, with a strong emphasis on preventive care, chronic disease management, and patient-centered communication.
