Internal Medicine/Nephrology Hands-On Inpatient/Outpatient Rotation in Akron, Ohio
Attending Introduction
Board-Certified Nephrologist. Completed residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where they served as Chief Nephrology Fellow. During their fellowship, gained extensive experience in all areas of clinical nephrology and kidney transplantation, as well as expertise in managing complex cases of hypertension.Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
You will be able to have hands-on experience in the outpatient setting, including interacting with patients, taking medical histories, performing basic physical exams and observing diagnosis and treatment conditions. You will also have inpatient observational experience.
Rotation Description
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis:

Patient Assessment: Learning to take a detailed medical history, perform a focused physical examination, and interpret relevant laboratory tests (such as serum creatinine, electrolytes, and urinalysis).

Imaging Studies: Understanding the role of imaging modalities like ultrasound and CT scans in evaluating kidney anatomy and function.
Management of Kidney Disorders:

Medical Management: Learning about pharmacological interventions for managing conditions like hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and complications of kidney disease.

Dietary and Lifestyle Interventions: Understanding the role of diet, fluid management, and lifestyle modifications in managing kidney disease and preventing progression.

Dialysis: Introduction to various modalities of renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the principles of vascular access management.
Specialty Clinics and Procedures:

Glomerulonephritis Clinic: Exposure to specialized clinics focused on the diagnosis and management of glomerular diseases.

Transplant Clinic: Observing the care of patients pre- and post-kidney transplantation, including immunosuppressive therapy management and transplant nephrology follow-up.

Renal Biopsy: Learning about the indications, technique, and interpretation of renal biopsies under the guidance of nephrologists.

Conducting initial and follow-up appointments, managing acute and chronic conditions, and performing routine health maintenance.
