Attending Introduction

Completed his residency in Family Medicine at Advocate Christ and pursued a fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. An internist Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, is affiliated with several local hospitals, including Rush Oak Park Hospital and Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. Has over 20 years of clinical experience including years of teaching experience. He specializes in treating kidney disease, including chronic kidney disease, among other conditions.

You will be able to have hands-on experience in the outpatient setting, including interacting with patients, taking medical histories, performing basic physical exams and observing diagnosis and treatment conditions. You will also have inpatient observational experience.

Rotation Description

During your Nephrology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain valuable experience in the diagnosis and management of kidney-related conditions.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis

  1. Patient Assessment: Learning to take a detailed medical history, perform a focused physical examination, and interpret relevant laboratory tests (such as serum creatinine, electrolytes, and urinalysis).

  2. Imaging Studies: Understanding the role of imaging modalities like ultrasound and CT scans in evaluating kidney anatomy and function.

Management of Kidney Disorders:

  1. Medical Management: Learning about pharmacological interventions for managing conditions like hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and complications of kidney disease.

  2. Dietary and Lifestyle Interventions: Understanding the role of diet, fluid management, and lifestyle modifications in managing kidney disease and preventing progression.

  3. Dialysis: Introduction to various modalities of renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the principles of vascular access management.

Specialty Clinics and Procedures:

  • Glomerulonephritis Clinic: Exposure to specialized clinics focused on the diagnosis and management of glomerular diseases.

  • Transplant Clinic: Observing the care of patients pre- and post-kidney transplantation, including immunosuppressive therapy management and transplant nephrology follow-up.

  • Renal Biopsy: Learning about the indications, technique, and interpretation of renal biopsies under the guidance of nephrologists.
By the end of your Internal Medicine/Nephrology rotation, you should be well-equipped with the foundational skills needed for managing a diverse patient population, with a strong emphasis on preventive care, chronic disease management, and patient-centered communication.

Patient Appointments:

Conducting initial and follow-up appointments, managing acute and chronic conditions, and performing routine health maintenance.
