Neurosurgery Inpatient/Outpatient Rotation in Los Angeles, California
Attending Introduction
Board-certified by the American Board of Neurosurgery and a Yale Fellowship graduate, has been an attending neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai for nearly 40 years. Developed the proprietary technology and techniques for NANO endoscopic spine surgery, exclusively available at our location. You will gain invaluable experience learning to interpret lumbar MRI scans and understanding optimal treatments for common spine conditions, such as herniated discs.
You will have the opportunity to observe and learn from the attending and other top instructors daily, with a university professor of spine surgery visiting once a month. Hands-on experience includes practicing wire-passing techniques using fluoroscopy and a lumbar spine model.
Rotation Description
During your neurosurgery clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will have exposure to a variety of activities that provide a comprehensive understanding of the field.
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Operating Room (OR) Participation:

Observing neurosurgical procedures such as craniotomies, spinal surgeries, and aneurysm repairs

Learning about surgical instruments and techniques

Understanding the roles of different members of the surgical team
Imaging and Diagnostics:

Learning to interpret neuroimaging studies, including MRI, CT scans, and angiograms

Understanding the indications for various imaging modalities in neurosurgery
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

Working with neurologists, radiologists, and other specialists

Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions
Typical Activities/Procedures
- Observation of surgeries (e.g., spinal, brain tumor, or trauma surgeries)
- Preoperative and postoperative patient assessments
- Learning to interpret diagnostic imaging (e.g., MRIs, CT scans)
- Assisting with minor procedures (e.g., suturing, wound care)
- Participating in rounds to discuss patient care with the neurosurgery team
- Attending educational conferences and case presentations
- Hands-on practice with surgical models and simulators (e.g., lumbar spine models)
- Shadowing experienced neurosurgeons in clinics or during patient consultations.
