Rotation Description

Your OB/Gyn clinical rotation with FMG Portal will provide you with hands-on experience in the ambulatory care of women’s health issues. The rotation will focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a variety of conditions related to obstetrics and gynecology.
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Here’s an overview of what you’ll typically learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Patient Care:

  1. History and Physical Examination: Conducting comprehensive gynecologic and obstetric histories and performing physical exams, including pelvic exams, breast exams, and prenatal assessments.

  2. Preventive Care: Providing routine preventive care such as Pap smears, HPV vaccinations, breast cancer screenings, and contraception counseling.

  3. Common Conditions: Diagnosing and managing common gynecologic conditions like infections, menstrual disorders, and menopausal symptoms.

Obstetrics:

  1. Prenatal Care: Monitoring and managing normal pregnancies, including regular check-ups, ultrasounds, and fetal monitoring.

  2. High-Risk Pregnancies: Exposure to the management of high-risk pregnancies, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and multiple gestations.

  3. Patient Education: Educating expectant mothers on nutrition, exercise, labor and delivery processes, and postpartum care.

Gynecology:

  • Routine Visits: Performing annual well-woman exams and addressing common concerns such as menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain, and contraception.

  • Procedures: Learning to perform or assist with in-office procedures such as colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion, and removal.

  • Screening and Prevention: Understanding the guidelines for screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cervical cancer, and other gynecologic cancers.
This rotation is integral in helping you develop a solid foundation in women’s health, emphasizing preventive care, patient education, and the management of both routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic issues in an outpatient setting.
