This rotation is an inpatient only observership.

Rotation Description

This OB/Gyn clinical rotation with FMG Portal will provide you with inpatient care of women’s health issues.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s an overview of what you’ll typically learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Antepartum Care & Postpartum Care

  1. Managing pregnant patients with medical complications such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm labor. Understanding the indications for and management of antepartum testing and fetal monitoring.

  2. Providing postpartum care to mothers, including assessing for complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, breastfeeding support, and contraception counseling. Participating in postpartum rounds and discharge planning for mother-baby pairs.

Gynecological Surgery:

  • Observing gynecological surgeries such as cesarean sections, hysterectomies, and laparoscopic procedures.

  • Learning about surgical indications, techniques, and perioperative management.

Complications Management:

  • Recognizing and managing obstetric and gynecological emergencies such as ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, and postoperative complications.
This rotation is integral in helping you develop a solid foundation in women’s health, emphasizing preventive care, patient education, and the management of both routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic issues.

Typical Activities/Procedures

  • Labor and Delivery: Observing and assisting with the management of labor, including vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
  • Prenatal Assessments: Participating in routine prenatal exams and monitoring maternal and fetal health.
  • Postpartum Care: Assisting in the care of patients after delivery, monitoring recovery, and providing postpartum education.
  • Obstetric Procedures: Observing or assisting in procedures like amniocentesis, fetal monitoring, and epidural administration.
  • Complication Management: Observing the diagnosis and management of obstetric complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or fetal distress.
  • Newborn Care: Assisting with initial newborn assessments and care (e.g., APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation).
  • Patient Rounds: Participating in multidisciplinary team rounds for comprehensive patient care discussions.
  • Documentation: Learning proper documentation of patient histories, delivery notes, and care plans.
  • Surgical Assistance: Observing or assisting in C-section surgeries or other obstetric procedures in the OR.
  • Patient Education: Supporting patient education regarding breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and family planning.
