Attending Introduction

Your attending physician is specialized in treating a wide range of hematologic conditions, including but not limited to clotting and bleeding disorders, acute and chronic leukemia, lymphoma, other blood cancers, and blood count abnormalities such as high or low platelets, anemia, and various other blood disorders.

Specialized in Bone Cancers, Lymphoma, Leukemia, Bleeding Disorders, Clotting Disorders, Abnormal Blood Count, Esophageal Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Multiple Myeloma, Hemophilia, Chemotherapy Administration, Head & Neck Cancer, Anemia, Soft Tissue Tumors, Laryngeal Cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease, Testicular Cancer, Gynecologic Malignancies, and Genital Cancer.

Rotation Description

During your Oncology/Hematology clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating cancer.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Objectives:

  • Clinical Skills: Develop competence in history taking, physical examination, and formulation of differential diagnoses specific to oncology patients.
  • Medical Knowledge: Gain a comprehensive understanding of cancer biology, epidemiology, and the principles of oncology treatment modalities (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery).
  • Patient Management: Learn to develop and implement treatment plans, manage complications, and provide supportive care.

Activities and Responsibilities:

Patient Care:
Conduct initial patient assessments, including history and physical exams.
Participate in daily rounds with the oncology team.
Follow up on diagnostic tests and imaging studies.
Assist in the development of individualized treatment plans.
Manage side effects and complications of cancer therapies.
Procedures:
Observe procedures such as biopsies, bone marrow aspirations, and lumbar punctures. Participate in the administration of chemotherapy under supervision.

  • Communication Skills: Enhance skills in delivering bad news, discussing prognosis, and communicating effectively with patients and their families.
