Attending Introduction
The attending completed over 800 surgeries in the previous year. Has been mentoring medical students for the past 24 years and currently serves as faculty at Touro University Las Vegas, with an additional appointment at UNLV. Earned their Doctor of Medicine degree from Loma Linda University in California and completed a transitional internship in orthopedic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Following this, completed orthopedic surgery residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in El Paso, and went on to pursue a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine in Santa Monica.
Rotation Description
Clinical Duties:
- Outpatient Clinics: Participation in outpatient clinics where students observe and assist in evaluating and treating patients with a variety of orthopedic conditions such as fractures, joint disorders, and sports injuries.
- Patient Rounds: When applicable, rounds with your orthopedics attending to assess and manage inpatient cases, including post-operative care and follow-up.
- Emergency Department: When applicable, exposure to acute orthopedic cases, including the management of trauma patients and emergency orthopedic procedures.
Surgical Experience:
- Surgical Techniques: Observing basic surgical techniques, such as suturing, casting, and splinting, and understanding the principles of aseptic technique and perioperative care.
- Pre- and Post-Operative Care: Involvement in pre-operative planning and post-operative care, including patient education and discharge planning.

Anatomy and Physiology: In-depth understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology.

Pathophysiology: Knowledge of common orthopedic conditions and their pathophysiology.

Diagnostic Skills: Proficiency in history-taking, physical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans.

Therapeutic Skills: Competence in formulating and implementing treatment plans, including surgical and non-surgical options.
You orthopedic surgery clinical rotation will be an intensive and immersive experience that will provide you with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting, develop essential surgical skills, and gain a comprehensive understanding of orthopedic surgery.
Typical Activities/Procedures
Patient Appointments:
Conducting initial and follow-up appointments, managing acute and chronic conditions, and performing routine health maintenance.
