Rotation Description

Your otolaryngology (ENT) clinical rotation with FMG Portal is an immersive experience that provides you with hands-on learning about diseases and disorders related to the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Clinical Experience:

    • Patient Consultations: You’ll participate in outpatient clinics where patients present with various conditions such as hearing loss, sinus infections, throat pain, and voice disorders. Expect to observe and assist with:
      • Otoscopic exams (ear exams)
      • Nasal endoscopies
      • Laryngoscopies (throat exams)
      • Audiometry (hearing tests)
    • Case Workups: You will learn to perform history-taking, physical exams, and differential diagnoses related to ENT disorders. Conditions you may encounter include sinusitis, chronic ear infections, nasal polyps, and head/neck tumors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Diagnostic Skills: Learn to diagnose common ENT conditions through physical examination techniques and diagnostic imaging.
  • Surgical Skills: While your role will be more observational, you may assist with surgical prep, suturing, or managing instruments. Understanding surgical anatomy is crucial.
  • Postoperative Care: You’ll learn how to manage post-surgical patients, including wound care, managing complications, and follow-up care.

Interdisciplinary Exposure:

  • You’ll interact with specialists in audiology, speech-language pathology, and oncology, gaining insight into how ENT intersects with these fields, especially in cancer care and rehabilitation.
Overall, an otolaryngology rotation provides a balance between clinical practice and surgical exposure, preparing you for a deeper understanding of ENT conditions and treatments.

Typical Activities/Procedures

During the rotation, you will observe and sometimes assist in ENT surgeries. Some common procedures include:

    • Tonsillectomy: Removal of the tonsils, often due to recurrent infections.
    • Adenoidectomy: Removal of adenoids, typically performed in children with breathing issues or recurrent ear infections.
    • Myringotomy with Tube Placement: Insertion of ear tubes to treat chronic ear infections or hearing problems.
    • Septoplasty: Surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum, improving breathing.
    • Sinus Surgery: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) to remove blockages and improve sinus drainage.
    • Thyroidectomy: Removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, often due to thyroid nodules or cancer.
    • Parotidectomy: Removal of the parotid gland, usually due to tumors or chronic infection.
    • Neck Dissection: Removal of lymph nodes in the neck, typically for cancer treatment.
    • Laryngectomy: Removal of the larynx, often performed for advanced laryngeal cancer.
