Attending Introduction

Experienced physician at one of Hillsborough County’s longest-established physical medicine and rehabilitation practices, completed residency at the University of Texas. Board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with a subspecialty in Brain Injury Medicine.

Currently serves as the Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Tampa General Hospital’s Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, the Medical Director for HCA Florida Brandon Hospital’s Inpatient Rehab Facility, and Vice Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Tampa General Hospital.

Rotation Description

During your Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation clinical rotation, you will gain practical experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with physical disabilities and impairments.
Here’s a detailed overview of what you should expect to learn. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Objectives: 

1. Clinical Skills Development: Enhance the ability to take comprehensive histories, perform detailed physical examinations, and develop differential diagnoses related to musculoskeletal, neurological, and other physical impairments.

2. Rehabilitation Planning: Learn to create and implement individualized rehabilitation plans that may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and the use of assistive devices.

3. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with a multidisciplinary team including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, and psychologists to provide holistic patient care.

4. Procedural Skills: Gain exposure to procedures such as joint injections, nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), and ultrasound-guided interventions.

Daily Activities:

  1. Morning Rounds: Begin the day with patient rounds, reviewing patient progress, adjusting treatment plans, and discussing cases with the healthcare team.

  2. Patient Consultations: Evaluate new patients referred for rehabilitation services, conduct thorough assessments, and develop treatment plans.

  3. Therapy Sessions: Observe and participate in various therapy sessions to understand the practical aspects of patient rehabilitation.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders: Understanding common musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, sports injuries, arthritis, and their rehabilitation.

  • Neurological Rehabilitation: Managing patients with conditions like stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple sclerosis.

  • Pain Management: Learning approaches to manage chronic pain through pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.

  • Prosthetics and Orthotics: Familiarization with the prescription and fitting of prosthetic limbs and orthotic devices to improve patient mobility and function.

  • Pediatric and Geriatric Rehabilitation: Addressing the unique rehabilitation needs of children with developmental disorders and elderly patients with age-related impairments.
A PM&R rotation is a valuable component of medical education, offering a unique perspective on patient care and rehabilitation that complements other medical specialties.

Patient Appointments:
Conducting initial and follow-up appointments, managing acute and chronic conditions, and performing routine health maintenance.

Completing patient charts and managing referrals and follow-ups.
