Attending Introduction

Currently a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery, Nova Southeastern University.  Professor of Plastic Surgery Residents, Larkin Hospital.  Assistant Professor of Surgery, FIU School of Medicine, and is an active social media presence with hundreds of thousands of followers across a half dozen platforms.

Students will follow during consultations, pre-operative appointments, during surgery and postoperative appointments with all his patients. Operates in his In-Office Surgical center.  Students will not be going to the hospital setting, but rather observe surgeries at the actual Plastic Surgery clinic. Patient load is approximately 40 patients per week.

Rotation Description

During your Plastic Surgery clinical observership with FMG Portal, you will typically have the opportunity to observe and learn about various aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery under the guidance of experienced surgeons.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

While the specific experience may vary depending on the institution and preceptor, here are some common aspects that students may learn during a Plastic Surgery observership:

Clinical Assessment and Patient Evaluation:

  • Students learn how to assess patients presenting with various congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, or aesthetic concerns.
  • You will observe the process of taking a comprehensive patient history, performing physical examinations, and formulating treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.

Surgical Techniques and Procedures:

  • Observation of a wide range of surgical procedures performed in plastic surgery, including reconstructive procedures (e.g., breast reconstruction, facial reconstruction) and aesthetic procedures (e.g., rhinoplasty, breast augmentation).
  • Learning about different surgical approaches, techniques, and instrumentation used in plastic surgery procedures.
  • Understanding the principles of tissue handling, wound closure, and scar management to achieve optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Patient Care and Management:

  • Learning about pre-operative evaluation and optimization of patients for surgery.

  • Observing the intraoperative management of patients, including anesthesia considerations and surgical team dynamics.

  • Participating in post-operative care, including wound care, pain management, and monitoring for complications.
