They completed their training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, followed by a subspecialty fellowship in craniofacial surgery.

Rotation Description

During your Plastic Surgery clinical observership with FMG Portal, you will typically have the opportunity to observe and learn about various aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery under the guidance of experienced surgeons.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

While the specific experience may vary depending on the institution and preceptor, here are some common aspects that students may learn during a Plastic Surgery observership:

Clinical Assessment and Patient Evaluation:

  • Students learn how to assess patients presenting with various congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, or aesthetic concerns.
  • You will observe the process of taking a comprehensive patient history, performing physical examinations, and formulating treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.

Surgical Techniques and Procedures:

  • Observation of a wide range of surgical procedures performed in plastic surgery, including reconstructive procedures (e.g., breast reconstruction, facial reconstruction) and aesthetic procedures (e.g., rhinoplasty, breast augmentation).
  • Learning about different surgical approaches, techniques, and instrumentation used in plastic surgery procedures.
  • Understanding the principles of tissue handling, wound closure, and scar management to achieve optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Patient Care and Management:

  • Learning about pre-operative evaluation and optimization of patients for surgery.

  • Observing the intraoperative management of patients, including anesthesia considerations and surgical team dynamics.

  • Participating in post-operative care, including wound care, pain management, and monitoring for complications.
Overall, your Plastic Surgery observership will provide you with a valuable opportunity to gain exposure to the diverse aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery, develop clinical skills, and explore potential career interests within the specialty.
