Attending Introduction

Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and completed their psychiatry residency at the University of Texas, Houston. In practice since 2003, earned a reputation as one of Minnesota’s top psychiatrists in the mental health field. Students will gain exposure to psychiatry and psychopharmacology, as well as learn about treatments like TMS, Spravato, and holistic options such as Alpha-Stim and Myndlift, among others.

Rotation Description

During your Psychiatry clinical rotation with FMG Portal, you will gain the opportunity to learn about the assessment, diagnosis, and management of mental health conditions.

Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.

Here’s a brief overview of what students typically learn during rotations. Please note that all rotations will have variations of patients and may not include the entirety of the following:

Patient Assessment: 

  • Psychiatric Interviews: Conducting thorough psychiatric evaluations, including detailed patient histories and mental status examinations.
  • Diagnostic Skills: Learning to recognize and diagnose a range of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.

Treatment Planning:

  • Psychopharmacology: Gaining knowledge about the use of psychiatric medications, their indications, side effects, and monitoring requirements.
  • Psychotherapy: Understanding different psychotherapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and supportive therapy.
  • Collaborative Care: Developing treatment plans that may involve collaboration with other healthcare providers, such as primary care physicians, social workers, and psychologists.

Professional Development:

  • Communication Skills: Enhancing skills in communicating with patients and their families, including delivering diagnoses, discussing treatment options, and providing psychoeducation.
  • Empathy and Rapport: Developing a compassionate approach to patient care, building rapport, and establishing therapeutic alliances with patients.
  • Ethical and Cultural Competence: Understanding ethical issues in psychiatry, such as patient confidentiality and informed consent, and learning to provide culturally sensitive care.

Typical Activities/Procedures

Chronic Condition Management: Managing long-term care of patients with chronic psychiatric conditions, including medication adjustments and ongoing therapy.
Crisis Intervention: Learning to identify and manage psychiatric emergencies and crises in an outpatient setting.
Follow-Up Care: Conducting follow-up visits to monitor patient progress and make necessary adjustments to treatment plans.
