Vascular Surgery Outpatient Rotation in Washington DC
Attending Introduction
Born at Holy Cross Hospital and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, a true native of the Washington, DC area. Completed both college and medical school at Howard University, graduating at the top of their class. Earning Magna Cum Laude in Biology, also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in Medicine.
Remained at Howard to complete a general surgery residency before pursuing a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Connecticut. Surgical Associates proudly welcomed them to its team of surgeons in 2021.

Rotation Description
During this rotation, you will gain hands-on experience in the outpatient management of vascular conditions while also observing in surgical procedures. You will participate in patient evaluations, preoperative assessments, and postoperative follow-ups for conditions such as peripheral artery disease, varicose veins, aneurysms, and dialysis access management.
Additionally, your performance during this rotation will lead to obtaining a US LOR, which is essential for your upcoming residency program applications.
Patient Evaluation & Clinical Decision-Making:
- During the rotation, you will learn to assess patients with vascular conditions through history-taking, physical examinations, and diagnostic imaging review. They will gain experience in identifying conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), carotid artery disease, aneurysms, and venous insufficiency. Emphasis will be placed on clinical decision-making, including when to pursue conservative management, medical therapy, or surgical intervention.
Outpatient Procedures & Hands-On Experience:
- You will observe various outpatient vascular procedures, such as vein ablations, sclerotherapy, dialysis access management, and endovascular interventions. You will gain an understanding of procedural techniques, sterile field management, and the role of minimally invasive treatments in vascular surgery. Additionally, you may practice basic skills such as suturing, wound care, and post-procedure monitoring.
Perioperative & Postoperative Care:
Students will participate in preoperative assessments and postoperative follow-ups, learning how to optimize patient outcomes before and after surgery. They will develop skills in wound care, managing surgical complications, and educating patients on lifestyle modifications to improve vascular health. By the end of the rotation, students will have a well-rounded understanding of vascular surgery’s role in outpatient care and long-term patient management.
Typical Activities/Procedures
Endovascular procedures (e.g., angioplasty, stenting)
Sclerotherapy and vein ablation (for varicose veins)
Dialysis access management (fistula creation, graft revision)
Carotid artery ultrasound and evaluation
Lower extremity arterial and venous duplex scanning
Wound debridement and ulcer care
Removal of sutures/staples and post-op wound checks
Compression therapy for venous insufficiency
